OUR DEMANDS:
Investigate
Hotel to Shelter Scams
We believe that the indictment of Frank Carone, former Chief of staff of Eric Adams, based upon a Migrant Shelter called Microtel Inn by Wyndam, of hotels turning into shelters, is just scratching the surface of this multi-billion-dollar industry, where corporations are lining their pockets.
This is a system that has been in the works and plans since the Migrant crisis began (created partly by Mayor Adams) and is now continuing, as the City Council has failed to create housing for the most needy despite all of the changes that have afforded faster and cheaper development.
Couple that with the continued rise of the homeless as the luxury towers standing empty soar above us, and now the Hotel to Shelters popping up like popcorn, one can see that there is something deeply wrong with the City’s plan in addressing the homelessness crisis.
Thus, we are demanding that Councilperson Crystal Hudson (who campaign benefited from over a $100,000 in Independent Expenditures from the Hotel industry) conduct an investigation into these Hotel to Shelters starting with the Red Roof on Flatbush and Ramada by Wyndham on Empire.
The owner of both shelters, Mr. Nahalkumer Gandhi has at least 19 such hotels (all created after 2020) with 15 scattered all over Brooklyn. Thus, instead of the City making these shelter choices based upon a Fair Share Analysis they are simply following where these developers are creating hotels and then conveniently stating that the locations are fine, regardless of what situation is at hand.
In fact, it appears they are entering into these contracts way before some of these hotels are even built or opened.
