The Dangers of Lead, Mercury, PAHs and Asbestos Poisoning
It had been determined that Lead, Mercury, Asbestos and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons “PAH” were present in a toxic site that was asking for a rezoning. Below is a brief summary of the dangers of these airborne toxins.
Lead Poisoning
“Even small amounts of lead can cause serious health problems. Children younger than age 6 are especially vulnerable to lead poisoning, which can severely affect how a child’s body grows and brain develops. At high levels, lead poisoning can be fatal.” “Mayor Clinic”
Mercury Poisoning
Your body will react if you eat, touch or inhale mercury. Once inside your body, mercury travels to your heart, central nervous system and kidneys. The most severe cases of mercury poisoning affect children, and fetuses of pregnant or breastfeeding women. (Cleveland Clinc,
PAH Poisoning
Chronic exposure to PAHs can result in adverse health outcomes. These include damage to the immune system, cataracts, kidney and liver issues; breathing problems; asthma-like symptoms; and reduced lung function. (National Library of Medicine)
Asbestos Poisoning
Asbestos exposure can lead to serious respiratory disease, including asbestosis and lung cancer. There is no safe level of asbestos exposure, even minimal contact can be harmful.

Drug Dealer Buys Toxic Site
A former Drug Dealer Alex Adjmi, who was pardoned by Trump bought a toxic and contaminated site five years ago that contained Asbestos, Lead, Mercury, and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons “PAHs”.
This site 73-99 Empire Blvd. is located right next to the largest residential buildings in the community, including Ebbets Field, Tivoli Towers and three new 17 story luxury towers. It’s across the street from a middle school and its play yard, and the only children’s playground that services all of Crown Heights South. It’s also across the street from the private homes located on the border of Prospect Lefferts Garden and along Sullivan Place in Crown Heights!
To get around doing the necessary environmental clean-up Adjmi simply applied and was accepted into NY State’s Brownfield program, but failed to do the clean-up making the excuse he was waiting for the results of his rezoning application. Adjmi was asking to increase his heights from 1 story to a 14 story residential apartment, in a commercial only restricted area on Empire Blvd, where the majority of the properties are one story.
Instead of the City demanding compliance with their own environmental review laws, they allowed Adjmi’s Brownfield Application, which he had not worked on since 2022, to sidestep all of the documentation and testing that was required for a toxic site.
The City then determined that no negative environmental impact (poisoning of the air) would occur if Adjmi worked the Mayor’s Office of Remediation, “OER” E-806 program.
