On the Souls of Children – The Bedford Armory Deal!
The Community is outraged at the deceitful, lying, self-serving Majority Leader Councilperson Laurie Cumbo as the twitter pages are blowing up about her current position regarding the Bedford Union Armory deal.

But before we discuss that, it is important for us to review Ms. Cumbo’s role in this deal.

Community’s Vision vs. Elected Official/Developers
Let’s go back to the beginning in 2014-2015 when the community demanded that the entire Bedford Union Armory be converted to accommodate all kinds of community related facilities and services, but it was City Council Laurie Cumbo and Borough President Eric Adams who insisted that at least [1]10 percent of the project be converted into housing that will help pay for the free programs and services to the community, since the land itself cost $1. 

[1]The Final plans showed that 90% of the space is being used for residential development and only 10% for “community” space.  And there are strong quotations around the word community.  They have not disclosed the final numbers of the “affordable” category but don’t expect for it to be any better than the community benefits agreement or lack there of.
Cumbo Uses the Children

As things got heated, it became Cumbo’s mantra that the only thing that mattered were the children and their need to have a recreational space to spend their time, to divert them from a life of crime and poverty.  She envisioned “Olympic Medalists” coming out of Crown Heights as a result of her efforts at taking care of the “kids”.

She continued to push the children’s angle as she bragged behind closed doors about her negotiating skills in selling off the community’s assets, in exchange for becoming the Majority Leader of the New York City Council (2nd most powerful position in the City Council) and making her MoCADA (her non-profit organization) a clearing house for millions of dollars and of course using both the Brooklyn Botanic Garden “BBG” and the Bedford Union Armory as leverage. (She approved the smaller development project along BBG and the Bedford Union Armory, right after becoming Majority Leader).

But what happened to the children that she pushed up front, used as a shield as residents and leaders cried out against the Bedford Union Armory deal?

And lets not forget the great lie Cumbo stated about the real estate development project, that broke the height protections, along the BBG.  The “miracle” deal she had secured to okay that project and when we took her to court, found out that no such agreement existed.  Showing this is not her first round of lies and betrayal of the community’s trust and her oath to protect the residents in her community.

In the latest of Ms. Cumbo’s failures to protect her residents (her district has the highest eviction rate in Brooklyn), Ms. Cumbo has pushed those children to the side, making outrageous claims of having been swindled, as if she is so stupid to trust developers without any binding written agreements.

Especially in a city with the worst record in the United States regarding community benefits, and in light of the Barclay Center, (which is in her district) whose volume of community benefits went down the toilet the moment that project was approved. 
“There will Be Retribution”

We know how hurt the community is right now, how outraged that in a low to moderate income community $50 dollar for half an hour swimming lesson is now being advertised for those children that Cumbo was advocating for, in a smaller than Olympic size pool and recreational facility.  It looks more like a small private fitness gym in an apartment complex, than a recreational facility for the community.

And the children?  [1]They are left out in the cold both figuratively and literally!  Just as Cumbo knew they would be.

But do not worry folks there is something called Karma and that will come to Laurie in all its power, as the the weight of her deeds catches up with her and as the souls of these children demand justice.  And maybe just may that Karma is now happening as Laurie Cumbo loses the bid to be head of the [2]NYC’s Department of Cultural Affairs. 

But rest assured Eric will find something for her to continue to get paid and enable her to use her skills at fraud, deception and lies.

[1]Laurie’s District has the highest level of homeless children and it is expected that number will rise as this development project furthers gentrification and displacement in the low to moderate income community. 
[2]The Streets were talking that Ms. Cumbo was attempting to be the head of Department of Community Affairs but had been rejected.
