Santiago\/Getty Images<\/div>\n<div rel=\"noopener\">\n<p data-block-key=\"zymiy\">A Gothamist investigation into<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/homeless-women-sought-shelter-in-nyc-they-found-chronic-violence-and-dysfunction\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">long-standing dangerous conditions at the 200-bed Tillary Street Women\u2019s Shelter<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>in Downtown Brooklyn shows why homeless people sometimes choose to sleep on the streets rather than enter New York City\u2019s shelter system, the chair of the City Council committee that oversees homeless services said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"do9f9\">\u201cWe need to do a real reassessment of the types of programs and services and the size of some of these shelters that exist for very vulnerable and high-needs populations,\u201d Councilmember Crystal Hudson said in an interview, reacting to the investigation.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"1ih3b\">Hudson, whose district includes the Tillary Street shelter, said the fact that some homeless people sleep outside or in the subways indicates the city is failing them.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"dubf3\">\u201cOur system is not working the way it\u2019s intended to work,\u201d she said. \u201cIf there\u2019s anyone who, for whatever reason, would rather sleep on the street than sleep in a shelter, then we have a lot of work to do in our shelter system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"dubf3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/nyc-shelters-need-reassessment-after-gothamist-probe-into-violent-site-lawmaker-says\">Full Gothamist Article Link<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div rel=\"noopener\"><\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NYC shelters need &#8216;reassessment&#8217; after Gothamist probe into violent site, lawmaker says Michael M.
